Many Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) practitioners believe that our environment is has an impact in on the functions of the mind and body. This belief has recently been validated by the field of epigenetics.
Now a research study published in the 2016 February issue of the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics has shown that there is an association between gambling and risk taking behaviors. The results showed that teenagers who participated in gambling such as video poker, online gambling and scratch-win cards were more susceptible to substance abuse i.e. :
• 60% smoked cigarettes
• 73% drank alcohol
• 63% smoked marijuana
The researchers concluded, ‘"It is important for healthcare professionals, teachers, and parents to recognize this problem and take it seriously."
Perhaps our schools should consider the implementation of lifestyle advice program that focuses on the dangers of smoking and gambling. It is hoped that this will have beneficial effects similarly to sustainability programs within the early childhood education centers and schools resulting in lowering healthcare burden and accompanying costs for the associated physical and emotional health problems associated with gambling, smoking and other substance abuse.
